Best Buy recently opened its first outlet in the Houston area, offering shoppers steep discounts on electronics, TVs and appliances while aiming to boost its return on returns, which have soared amid the rise of e-commerce and the proliferation of generous return policies.
Brick-and-mortar retailers, which had previously sold most of its returned items to liquidators, are outsourcing their returns to third-party companies such as Optoro and Happy Returns to recoup some of their losses and reduce waste. Other retailers are handling returns in-house and opening more outlet stores to resell open-box items that have proliferated in recent years.
Best Buy opened its first outlet, in Chicago, in 2014 and has since expanded to 13 outlets nationally, including in Houston, San Antonio and Farmers Branch, Texas. The retailer had long sold open-box and clearance items in the back of its store, but began opening outlets to give customers a one-stop shopping experience while clearing out used inventory in its traditional stores.
Best Buy Outlets are typically a third to a half of the size of a regular Best Buy store, and feature wide-open floor plans to showcase rows of used TVs and appliances. The Best Buy Outlet in Houston, which spans 22,000 square feet, is in a former Golf Galaxy store. Golf photos and putting green-lined shelves still line the walls of the store.
The outlets carry brand-name products, such as Whirlpool, LG and even luxury brands such as Viking and Thermador, at up to a 50 percent discount. On a recent Friday, the outlet was selling an LG washer with a small dent on the right side for $647, down from its regular price of $809, as well as a Viking induction cooktop for $2,273, down from its regular price of $3,499.
