USCIS AR-11: How to Report Your Change of Address Online

What is the USCIS AR-11 Form and Why Do You Need It?

If you are a noncitizen living in the United States, you may have heard of the USCIS AR-11 form. This is a form that you must use to report any change of address to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) within 10 days of moving, unless you are exempted. This helps ensure that USCIS mails important notices and documents to the right place, and that you do not miss any deadlines or appointments related to your immigration case.

Filing this form is not only a legal obligation, but also a benefit for you. By updating your address with USCIS, you can avoid possible delays, fines, penalties, or even removal from the United States. You can also receive timely updates on your case status, as well as access various resources and services offered by USCIS.

In this article, we will explain who must file this form, who is exempt from filing this form, how to file this form online or by mail, tips and tricks for filing this form successfully, and frequently asked questions (FAQs) about this form.

Who Must File the Form?

According to USCIS, all noncitizens in the United States must report any change of address or new address within 10 days of moving, unless they fall into one of the following categories:

  • A visa holders (foreign government officials)

  • G visa holders (employees of international organizations)

  • Visa waiver program participants (ESTA travelers)

  • Asylum applicants who have not received a decision on their Form I-589, Application for Asylum and for Withholding of Removal

  • Refugees

  • Asylees

  • Lawful permanent residents (green card holders)

If you belong to any of these categories, you do not need to file the USCIS AR-11 form. However, you may still need to update your address with other government agencies, such as the U.S. Postal Service, the Internal Revenue Service, the Social Security Administration, and your state's Department of Motor Vehicles.

Who is Exempt from Filing the Form?

Even if you are not in one of the categories listed above, you may still be exempt from filing the USCIS AR-11 form in some special situations. These include:

  • If you are a victim of domestic violence, trafficking, or other crime, and you have filed or are filing a Form I-360, Petition for Amerasian, Widow(er), or Special Immigrant; a Form I-918, Petition for U Nonimmigrant Status; or a Form I-914, Application for T Nonimmigrant Status. In this case, you should use the Form AR-11 Special Registration instead of the regular Form AR-11.

  • If you are a conditional permanent resident who has filed or is filing a Form I-751, Petition to Remove Conditions on Residence, based on a good faith marriage that was terminated by divorce or death, or based on abuse by your spouse. In this case, you should use the Form AR-11 SR instead of the regular Form AR-11.

  • If you are a conditional permanent resident who has filed or is filing a Form I-829, Petition by Entrepreneur to Remove Conditions on Permanent Resident Status. In this case, you should use the Form AR-11 SR instead of the regular Form AR-11.

If you are exempt from filing the USCIS AR-11 form for any of these reasons, you should follow the instructions on how to file the appropriate form by mail. You cannot file these forms online.
